We have supplied cold rooms to the UK market for many years and our customers return regularly for repeat business. Usually they buy more cold room units from us, especially if they are contractors who are quoting for new sites or expansion of existing ones. They also buy our cold room shelving, frost heave mats and refrigeration systems. One thing that we do not generally get asked to quote for is cold room dismantling. Our standard cold room supply service does not include dismantling but a long-standing client recently contacted us for help.
The client, an Italian food company operating close to Heathrow Airport, needed to re-organize their warehousing space and a cold room that we had supplied them 14 years ago, and was notably still working perfectly, was in the way! Let’s pause here for a moment and take that in. Such was the quality of the cold room panels that after 14 years the only reason for it to be dismantled was because of space limitations. Our Technical Director who was involved in the original cold room supply happened to be available at the time the enquiry came in, so we offered our assistance.
The cold room was a food freezer store which had operated at -22 C. Frost heave mats had been installed under the floor. So the cold room panels, the heater mats and the refrigeration plant all had to be removed.
Recycling Cold Room Panels
Once everything was dismantled, it was not just a case of discarding the various pieces of kit. The quality of the original cold room panels was so good that they went to be recycled and used in another cold room build. Here are photographs of the panels, racking system and refrigeration plant in the dismantling process.
So if you need to re-arrange cold room storage and warehousing space, don’t make the mistake of thinking that what you dismantle is a loss. Quite the opposite! Our client from 14 years ago had the benefit of recycling what he initially thought might be discarded …. and all because he purchased a cold room freezer built of quality panels 🙂
